What is the purpose of the retreat?
• A time of rest, fellowship, and equipping.
• An opportunity to hear and reflect on Steve Quen’s experience as pastor of the Bay Area Chinese Bible Church.
• An introduction and invitation to the equipping resources of The Leadership Connection (TLC) and the Institute for the Study of Asian American Christianity (ISAAC).

Who is the retreat for?
This retreat is primarily, but not exclusively, for pastors who serve in English Ministries of Bay Area Chinese churches. We would like to limit the number of participants to 30 (ideally, we’d like to have 10-12 pastors from the Peninsula, the South Bay, and the East Bay, respectively).

Where and when will it be held?
The Pastors’ Retreat will be held at San Damiano Retreat Center in Danville. We begin on Monday, Aug. 4 at 10 AM and end the next day (Tuesday, Aug. 5) at 4 PM. See schedule below.

How much will it cost?
$200 per registrant (which includes overnight accommodations in single rooms, two lunches, a dinner, and breakfast). However, we do not want the cost to hinder your participation! ISAAC and TLC, with the support of individuals who are concerned about the health of Chinese churches, are providing scholarships for the conferees. You may request full ($200) or partial scholarships ($150, $100, $50). We also hope that your church can cover some or all of the cost.

We had a wonderful time of learning, discussion, and fellowship at the South Bay Chinese churches consultation last Saturday! (The presentations and summaries will be posted in the resource section of this blog site)

The event created quite a stir! Dr. Samuel Tsang, the Vice President of Overseas Theological Seminary (OTS) has already posted his observation of the event on the seminary’s website at http://www.otseminary.org/site/news/43 - Here is an excerpt:

…the survival of our churches will depend on whether we listen to the next generation. Many OBC [overseas born Chinese]churches are denying a problem by ignoring it and by shifting focus to a more China-centered mission. The ministry to mainland China cannot happen until our present church survives and thrives. Without dealing with our problem at home, there will be no foreign mission soon. I hope this will be a beginning of something special, a movement that will change our global ministry. We must solve our local problems. OTS will work towards that end. - Dr. Samuel Tsang

And here is Dr. James Chuck’s summary of the day:

THE CONSULTATION FOR CHINESE CHURCHES held on Saturday, April 26, 2008, attracted more than 60 registered participants representing more than 20 Chinese congregations in the Bay Area, and several organizations. The Consultation was held on the campus of Overseas Theological Seminary in San Jose, joint sponsors of the event this event together with the Institute for the Study of Asian American Christianity (ISAAC).

Dr. Sam Tsang, Vice President and Professor of New Testament of the Seminary, welcomed the participants and made the opening remarks. Dr. Timothy Tseng, Executive Director of ISAAC and a church historian specializing in Asian American Christianity, gave a particularly clear and insightful presentation outlining the three phases of Christian outreach to the Chinese in America, each of which is characterized by the themes “faith,” “hope,” and “love.” The first generation of Chinese Christians in America faced many economic and racist obstacles during a turbulent time in China. They were greatly supported by American missionaries, who also displayed great faith in their efforts to build the Chinese churches. The theme of the second phase is “hope” because post-1965 Chinese immigrants brought new energy to the Chinese churches. Tseng suggested that Chinese churches in America are now entering a third phase in its history. It is characterized by “post-modern” (and biblical) love – a love that is eager to communicate with people who are different without abandoning one’s distinctive. Indeed, this is the key for Chinese Christians to overcome the gaps between past and present, OBC and ABC, Chinese and non-Chinese in the future.

This was followed by a presentation by Dr. James Chuck, Director of the Bay Area Chinese Churches Research Project and Senior Consultant for ISAAC. Previously, Dr. Chuck served 40 years on the pastoral staff of the First Chinese Baptist Church in San Francisco, followed by 16 years as Professor of Theology and Church Ministries at the American Baptist of the West in Berkeley. In his presentation, Dr. Chuck described the growth of the number of Chinese congregations in the Bay Area, from 15 congregations in 1950 to 158 in 1996, when the initial study was published and distributed.

Reasons given for this growth included the rapid increase of the Chinese population, wider geographical dispersion of Chinese in the Bay Area, Chinese coming from more diverse points of origin, immigrant pastors and their overseas network, the contribution of overseas Chinese students who had been nurtured in Chinese Bible study groups on U. S. campuses, church splits, the planting of new churches, increased involvement by denominations who had not previously worked in Chinese in the Bay Area, and the leadership of some gifted and entrepreneurial leaders, and last but not least the leading and the power of the Holy Spirit.

The current follow-up study, still in progress, updates the material published in 1996, and attempts to identify trends and issues. The results of our current study will be published this fall, and will include a brief description of each church included in the study, together with contact information. Dr. Tseng will have an article which puts the study in historical perspective, and articles on various issues facing the Chinese churches in the Bay Area will be included.

The afternoon session was led by Rev. Donald Ng, the Senior Pastor of the First Chinese Baptist Church in San Francisco. Before coming to this position, he served for 18 years with Educational Ministries of American Baptist Churches of the U. S. A. Using a group process known as “story boarding,” Pastor Ng skillfully led the group to identify current challenges faced by Chinese churches in the Bay Area. Here is his report:

As the fourth and last consultation, we were able to compare the priorities of the South Bay with the previous events. The top priorities in the South Bay are: Spiritual Development and Leader Development. The second tier priorities are: Mission Outreach and Christian Education followed by Church Life.

Spiritual Development and Christian Education appeared also in the San Francisco and East Bay churches. Leader Development and Mission Outreach/Evangelism appeared in all four groups.

The concern for Church Life or Church Health only appeared in the South Bay and Alameda suggesting that in many of the newer churches, there are concerns about generational issues, communication, and church unity.

The churches perhaps older and historic in SF Chinatown and San Francisco expressed the priority of Retention of Members and Replenishment of Members. This may be the concern from declining members.

The next step on the results of the storyboard sessions is to draft an article analyzing the priorities and needs of Bay Area Chinese churches

For the future, ISAAC is currently discussing ways and means by which issues and challenges raised during our several consultations can be addressed. ISAAC desires to do this in partnership with seminaries, local church, ministerial groupings, and organizations of various kinds which relate to Chinese congregations. Overseas Theological Seminary is an evangelical Chinese seminary geared towards training up pastors and Christian vocational workers. It is originally founded by the Rev. John Tsang in Hong Kong. It offers an MDiv and MBS program with strong biblical and theological emphasis. Its vision is to train up good and faithful servants to the greater Church who can make lasting impact.

Over forty persons from eight East Bay Chinese churches were present for the Consultation held on January 12th on the campus of Chinese Christian School in Alameda. Churches represented include Chinese Community Methodist Church, Oakland; Chinese Church of Christ, Berkeley; Grace Chinese Alliance Church, Concord; Immanuel Taiwanese Presbyterian Church in Fremont; Berkeley Chinese Community Church; Chinese Presbyterian Church of Oakland; Bay Area Chinese Bible Church; and Calvary Presbyterian Church in Berkeley. This is the third of four Consultations scheduled, and so far almost 30 churches have taken part in these meetings.

During the morning, those assembled heard a presentation focusing on the main findings of the 1996 Study, and what we hope to uncover in the present follow up study. D.J. Chuang, of the L2 Foundation and Leadership Network, gave a presentation about the diversity of new Asian American church plants. He noted that the new generation of Asian American Christian leaders expressed very little interest in Asian American identity and issues. In the afternoon, those present identified issues and challenges facing their congregations and shared it with the Planning Team. Presentations at and full summaries of this consultation will be posted in the “Resources” tab on this website.

We are grateful for the hospitality of Pastor Steve Quen and the Bay Area Chinese Bible Church for providing a wonderful facility for this consultation and for inviting D.J. Chuang to share his presentation.

A fourth and final Consultation, this one for Chinese churches in the South Bay, is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 in Cupertino. We expect to publish our report in book form in the fall of 2008. We believe that local churches will find this to be an important resource that can be utilize and enhance their own outreach and ministry.

Subject:  Update on the January 12, 2008 Consultation.

We are working on the January 12, 2008 Consultation for East Bay Chinese Churches.  At that time, our Project Planning Team look forward to meeting you and your people, and entering into what we hope will be a productive dialogue.

In 1950, there was a total of 15 Chinese churches in the Bay Area.  By the time we did our Study in 1996, that number had grown to 158, a tenfold increase within a period of less than 50 years.  In our 1996 Study, we listed 16 Chinese churches in Contra Costa County, and 40 in Alameda County, making a total of 56 churches in the East Bay.  On a typical Sunday in 1996, 6330 young people and adults were actually present for the Sunday worship service in the  East Bay Chinese churches.  This represents about 35% of the 22,500 persons who attend a Chinese church on a typical Sunday.  Five East Bay  churches had services only in English; 5 had a bilingual service; 18 had separate English and Chinese service; and 12 had services only in Chinese.

Presently, I am working with a list of 73 East Bay churches, suggesting that as many as 17  new congregations may have been started in the East Bay since 1996. The present study will give a contact information and a brief description of each of these churches, as well as update information we had on churches which were part of our 1996 Study.

I strongly suggest that you come to the Consultation with some of your lay people. This would be a wonderful way for you and your church leadership to start the new year.  I know they will be interested and excited with what they will learn, and enjoy the warm fellowship and friendly exchange with others who are laboring in the Lord’s vineyard. More importantly, we need the input that you can give for the good of all.

A couple of weeks ago, I sent out a mailing announcing a CONSULTATION FOR EAST BAY CHINESE CHURCHES, scheduled for Saturday, January 12, 2008, 9:30- 3:30 at the Bay Area Chinese Bible Church’s Alameda Campus. During the Consultation we want to share with you what we have found regarding the present situation of East Bay Chinese churches; and we want you to tell us what issues and challenges you local congregation. The results will be published in a report which will include all the churches in the Bay Area Counties. I hope that you will plan to come with a group of your church people.

During the next few weeks, I will try to contact as many of you as I can on the phone to talk to you about your congregation. A reminder that the CONSULTATION FOR CHINESE CHURCHES (covering San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin counties) is scheduled for Saturday, October 27, 2007, at the Sunset Church, 3635 Lawton Street, S.F., from 9:30- 3:30. We will hold a consultation for churches in the East Bay on January 12, 2008 at the Bay Area Chinese Bible Church in Alameda and on April 26, 2008 in the San Jose area (location to be determined). More information will be forthcoming.
